About Dance District Social Dance Studio

In August of 2006, Dance District: Social Dance Studio first opened its doors to the public. Conceived as a comfortable and inviting environment, the studio is designed to be a home away from home. High exposed wooden beam ceilings, sandblasted limestone walls and careful attention to detail has created a unique space within the Distillery District.

Ilona - Head Dance InstructorCreated on the founding principle that Social Dance is meant to be fun, enjoyable and unpretentious, Dance District has never stopped trying to spread the joy of dance. Ilona Kamecki, the founder, head instructor and visionary behind the studio always starts off her classes with the great phrase "If you can walk, you can dance." Ilona's vision is what has made Dance District Social Dance Studio such a success in the distillery, and it is her vivacious spirit that keeps the students coming back time after time.

In the two years since its inception the teaching staff at Dance District has swelled to 6 and keeps on growing with each session of the very popular Dance Teacher Training Program. Our expert dance instructors never cease to amaze with their natural flaire and cool, comfortable approach to teaching and dancing. We know that you will never feel ill-at-ease under their watchful eyes. The expansion of the studio has also led to the promotion of Dance District's first instructor, Marek, to the position of Studio Manager, so feel free to contact him with all of your dancing inquiries.

Marek - Dance Studio ManagerHaving expanded into operations as an event venue, Dance District has had great success hosting everything from wedding receptions to corporate luncheons to video shoots. We have even been a part of various television shows and commercials, including Slice network's "Till Debt Do Us Part," Omni One's "Na Luzie," and Much Music's "Love Court."

We strive to promote a comfortable atmosphere that will make confident dancers out of people of all shapes, ages, sizes and ability levels. Come try one of our ballroom dance programs to find out why we have done so well as Toronto's Premiere Social Dance Studio.

Distillery District History

Founded in 1832 by Brothers-in-law William Gooderham and James Worts, the Gooderham and Worts Distillery eventually became the largest distillery in the British empire. Set on 13 acres in downtown Toronto, the forty plus buildings constitute the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian Industrial Architecture in North America. The Distillery District is a national historic site.

Distillery District

In just the past few years, The Distillery District has become one of the most romantic and enjoyable destinations in the City. The Distillery District is Toronto’s first pedestrian only village and the city’s only historic district. From the brick lined streets to the European piazza styled areas, The Distillery District is, as the Globe and Mail asserts, “a picture postcard draw”.

Like Soho in the 1960’s, The Distillery District has become an area associated with creative thinking and expression. The area’s rebirth has been dedicated to promoting arts, culture and entertainment. Over the past few years this new landmark facility has attracted the best of the best, including internationally acclaimed galleries, artists from all corners of the arts spectrum, theatres, restaurants, cafes and boutique retailers.

Dance District Social Dance Studio is proud to be part of such a rich history and hopes it contributes to the wonderful landscape that you can find in the Distillery on any day of the week.
